High school basketball: DeMatha job open for just the second time in 65 years as Mike Jones departs for college job
The Virginia Tech basketball program announced Monday that longtime DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) head coach Mike Jones has accepted the associate head coach position with the program.

Jones coached DeMatha for the past 19 years and owns a record of 511-119 (.811 winning percentage) with eight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championships. DeMatha finished 2020-21 ranked No. 4 in the MaxPreps Top 25 with a 9-0 record in an abbreviated campaign.

The 1991 DeMatha graduate took over the helm following the departure of legendary head coach Morgan Wootten, who led the Stags to a record of 1,274-192 from 1956-2002.
The school said via social media the search for Jones' replacement would begin in the coming weeks "but for now we celebrate with coach Jones this opportunity."

The next DeMatha coach will have massive shoes to fill after Wootten and Jones led the national powerhouse to 41 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference titles and won nearly 85 percent of their games over the past 65 seasons.

High school softball: Vandebilt Catholic's incredible 112-game run tops list of longest winning streaks - HIGHSCORE
High school softball: Vandebilt Catholic's incredible 112-game run tops list of longest winning streaks
In 1978, Vandebilt Catholic (Houma, La.) athletic director Gerald Albert was having difficulty finding anyone to coach the school's relatively new softball program. So he decided to take the job himself.

According to a feature in the July 1, 2008 edition of the Houma Times, Albert had two choices, shut down the team or coach himself. "Whenever there was a coaching opening we couldn't fill, I would step in and coach that so we could continue to compete."

As a result of Albert's decision, Vandebilt Catholic survived extinction and instead made high school softball history. Behind the pitching of Michelle Broussard, the Lady Terriers won 112 straight games between 1980 and 1983. Broussard was the catalyst, winning 88 straight games and finishing her high school career 88-0. Unfortunately, her career strikeout and no-hitter totals have never been compiled.

Vandebilt Catholic's win streak highlights the MaxPreps list of high school softball teams with 50 or more wins in a row.

At the time of the streak, the National Federation of High Schools did not have a record for consecutive wins, Bruce Carnahan, the editor of the record book, told the Associated Press in 1983. The only school at the time believed to have as many as 50 wins was Righetti (Santa Maria, Calif.), which had a 50-game win streak from 1979 to 1981.

No team has topped the 112-game streak, but a team 180 miles away on the west side of Louisiana came close. Barbe (Lake Charles, Calif.), behind the pitching of Candice Carnahan, won 108 straight games, 107 in a row by Carnahan. During the streak, Carnahan also had 88 shutouts and 50 no-hitters. Barbe lost to West Monroe (also undefeated at the time at 30-0) in the state playoff quarterfinals in the final game of Carnahan's career.

Sherwood (Sandy Spring, Md.) is the only other school with over 100 wins, finishing with 105 straight before losing to Northwest (Germantown) 9-5 in the third game of the 2017 season. Sherwood went on to post a 32-game winning streak over the next two seasons for a run of 137-1.

There are two current streaks on the list. Papillion-LaVista has posted back-to-back 36-0 seasons during Nebraska's fall season and will take a 72-0 streak into the 2021 season. Scarborough (Maine), meanwhile, has a 63-game win streak dating back to 2017.

Sources for the list include the NFHS record book, state association record books, Cal-Hi Sports Record Book by Mark and Nelson Tennis, as well as research via the MaxPreps rankings and newspapers.com. Streaks do not include totals that occurred from a summer or spring season to a fall season.

Destiney McPhaul named 2020-21 HIGHSCORE Pennsylvania High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year - HIGHSCORE
Destiney McPhaul named 2020-21 MaxPreps Pennsylvania High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year
Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020-21 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.

Destiney McPhaul of West Catholic (Philadelphia) is the 2020-21 MaxPreps Pennsylvania High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The 5-foot-8 senior guard led the Burrs to a 12-4 record and the Class AAA state championship.

McPhaul averaged 20.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.4 blocks per game. She had a double-double – 16 points and 10 rebounds -- in the 67-56 championship game win over Mohawk.

McPhaul will play in the Who's Next All-American Game at the George Gervin Center in San Antonio on April 2 and attend Virginia Tech next year.

Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which is scheduled to be released April 20.
