Girls high school basketball rankings: No. 12 Paul VI among four newcomers to this week's OFFICIAL Top 25 rankings - OFFICIAL
Girls high school basketball rankings: No. 12 Paul VI among four newcomers to this week's MaxPreps Top 25 rankings
As always, Washington, D.C., is loaded with talent — but the pandemic is keeping a lot of teams away from the court.

Sidwell Friends was ranked in the preseason MaxPreps Top 25 girls high school basketball rankings but will not play this season. Meanwhile St. John's, which was ranked last week, is down a four-game schedule. So neither is in this week's Top 25, because part of being a top team is testing the talent on the roster — and four games (or no games) simply doesn't ask enough of a team and a coach.

Yes, teams are ranked that have yet to play, but their schedules are expected to kick in soon, so unfortunately, Sidwell Friends and St. John's must join teams from California, Oregon and Washington on the rankings sidelines. (Teams from the last three states may actually play more than four games, but won't start — if they do start — until the spring.)

And further complicating the process is the lack of major tournaments and intersectional games, which are the best way to measure teams from different regions. As always, though, we are confident the following 25 teams are very good girls high school basketball teams — but this year, more than any other, there could easily be better teams that are not on the list or on the court.

MaxPreps Top 25 Girls High School Basketball Rankings

1. Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, Fla.)
Record: 12-0 | Last week: 1
District playoffs now begin for the Highlanders, but given the too-many divisions in Florida postseason, don't expect too much competition in the 4A bracket.

2. Westlake (Atlanta)
Record: 14-0 | Last week: 3
Westlake moves up to No. 2, and after a game Feb. 3, will begin postseason — and there are some pretty good teams standing between Westlake and a AAAAAA title.

3. Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati)
Record: 19-0 | Last week: 6
Another team with just one game left before the playoffs begin, the Cougars are now No. 3 thanks to a tougher schedule than the schools ranked lower.

4. Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.)

Record: 5-0 | Last week: 4
There are about 53,000 people in Minnetonka, but a very surprising number of those people are very talented high school girls' basketball players. Hopkins has a lot of them, of course, but so does crosstown rival, Minnetonka, which lost to the Royals by one last week.

5. Edison Academy (Detroit)
Record: 0-0 | Last week: 5
Eventually, Edison will get to play, or so we're led to believe. Supposedly games can begin in Michigan on Thursday, but as is the case everywhere, you never know.

6. Incarnate Word Academy (St. Louis)
Record: 16-0 | Last week: 8
Incarnate Word's next opponent is 19-3 Whitfield, which lost to IWA by only 14 the first time around — this game, though, is in the friendly confines.

7. Cypress Creek (Houston)
Record: 23-0 | Last week: 10
Cypress Creek finishes up the regular season this week, and draws 20-1 Jersey Village on Friday. But that one Jersey Village loss was to Cypress Creek — by 61.

8. Norman (Okla.)
Record: 11-0 | Last week: 11
Classen SAS has a win over No. 13 DeSoto and only one loss all year, so the Feb. 11 game matching Norman and Classen SAS could shake up the MaxPreps Top 25.

9. St. John-Vianney (Holmdel, N.J.)
Record: 0-0 | Last week: 9
St. John-Vianney finally gets under way Feb. 3 — and with the addition of a game against talented Trenton Catholic to the schedule, we'll get to see if SJV is really a Top 10 team.

10. Ensworth (Nashville, Tenn.)
Record: 12-0 | Last week: 12
It's going to be a challenging weekend for Ensworth. First up, on Friday, is 14-6 Brentwood Academy, which lost to Ensworth by nine earlier this year, followed by 16-1 Bearden on Saturday afternoon.

11. Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.)
Record: 19-1 | Last week: 14
Montverde outlasted previously unbeaten Winter Haven 76-66 last week, and since Montverde doesn't participate in the Florida postseason, that could be it for the season.

12. Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.)
Record: 7-0 | Last week: NR
The Panthers hammered Elizabeth Seton 71-51, which matters because Seton turned around and beat previous No. 2 Bishop McNamara. And then, more to the point, PVI knocked off previous No. 17 New Hope Academy to earn a spot in the Top 25.

13. DeSoto (Texas)
Record: 20-1 | Last week: 15
DeSoto shouldn't have too much trouble in the final two regular season games, but the 6A playoffs that follow will be a much tougher test.

14. North Central (Indianapolis)
Record: 21-2 | Last week: 16
North Central is now in the 4A playoffs, but note that Bedford North Lawrence, which beat North Central earlier this season, will be the likely semifinal opponent.

15. Fremont (Plain City, Utah)
Record: 16-0 | Last week: 18
Fremont has one more tough league game left against a solid Syracuse team, but Herriman looks like the biggest threat when the 6A playoffs begin.

16. Newark (Ohio)
Record: 18-1 | Last week: 20
Newark beat its next two opponents by a combined score of 146-29 the first time around, so look for Newark to take another jump next week if teams ranked higher should falter.

17. Grandview (Aurora, Colo.)
Record: 2-0 | Last week: NR
Grandview appears in the rankings for the first time, and not coincidentally, Colorado just started playing. Plans call for a 14-game schedule plus postseason so Grandview will have a chance to prove it belongs.

18. Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.)
Record: 1-0 | Last week: 22
Neumann-Goretti and Cardinal O'Hara are traditionally two of the strongest teams in Philadelphia, and those two just happen to be Archbishop Wood's next two opponents.

19. Rutgers Prep (Somerset, N.J.)
Record: 2-0 | Last week: 19
Rutgers Prep continues its abbreviated schedule but what appears to be a lack of quality opponents could be an issue for continued ranking.

20. Valley Vista (Surprise, Ariz.)
Record: 2-0 | Last week: 21
Valley Vista has one more game this week, and one the next. And then plays five games in six days.

21.Hazel Green (Ala.)
Record: 28-1 | Last week: 23
Hazel Green begins the 6A playoffs, but note that Hoover, considered the next strongest team in the state, will be in 7A. Which means there will be no rematch of the Jan. 23 win that put Hazel Green in the Top 25, and knocked Hoover out.

22. Anderson County (Lawrenceburg, Ky.)
Record: 12-0 | Last week: 24
Bethlehem has only one loss, on the road by one point to unbeaten Boyd County, so Thursday's opponent will be a test for Anderson County.

23. Ponchatoula (La.)
Record: 22-0 | Last week: 25
In the middle of a four-games-in-seven-day stretch, Ponchatoula must travel to 15-4 Mandeville and host 18-4 Mt. Carmel. So while last week's 31-28 win over Anchorage Christian was a big one, there's still work to do.

24. Johnston (Iowa)
Record: 10-0 | Last week: NR
Johnston jumps to the top of the Iowa list, and into the Top 25, but must deal with more experienced, and very talented, Waukee later this week. And it won't get easier, as there are a lot of strong teams in Iowa this year.

25. Upperman (Baxter, Tenn.)
Record: 23-0 | Last week: NR
Upperman joins the Volunteer State's Ensworth in the Top 25, but the two will not play in postseason. Ensworth is a 3A school and Upperman is 2A.

Dropped out: No. 2 Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.); No. 7 St. John's (Washington D.C.); No. 13 Union (Tulsa, Okla.); No. 17 New Hope Academy (Landover Hills, Md.).

High school girls basketball rankings: Bearden, Minnetonka earn spots in OFFICIAL Top 25 as postseason looms for much of the country - OFFICIAL
High school girls basketball rankings: Bearden, Minnetonka earn spots in MaxPreps Top 25 as postseason looms for much of the country
Even in the best of times, high school basketball is wildly unpredictable. Teenage problems, high school drama and the ups and downs of adolescent life create oceans of uncertainty when it comes to figuring out how well a team might play on a given night.

This year, COVID-19 has kicked that baked-in unpredictability to new heights, especially when it comes to the MaxPreps Top 25. For example, No. 1 Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, Fla.) and No. 2 Westlake (Atlanta) were scheduled to play a game — but it was canceled. And with it was the on-the-court decider for the top spot. This week, No. 8 Norman (Okla.) was supposed to play Classen SAS (Oklahoma City), which had knocked off No. 13 DeSoto (Texas) earlier this season — but that game has been called off.

And now, as we move into postseason in many states (some of which will allow fans for the games), we can only expect more of the same. Some seasons will likely end with a COVID cancellation in the playoffs, maybe even a forfeit. Others may find themselves without key players or head coaches down the stretch thanks to contact tracing or test results.

The bottom line? What is usually a crazy sport will be crazier than ever in 2021, and anyone who has any confidence in any predictions just isn't paying attention. And though rankings are fun and state titles are impressive achievements, the most important result this year is that everyone involved with all these teams makes it through the season in good health.

This year, that's a championship worth playing for.

NOTE: We encourage all girls basketball teams to update schedules and results on MaxPreps – especially those in the mix for MaxPreps Top 25 consideration. For assistance or questions, please reach out to [email protected]

MaxPreps Top 25 Girls Basketball Rankings

1. Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, Fla.)
Record: 14-0 | Last week: 1
The Highlanders start the 4A Region 2 playoffs Thursday and 19-4 Wesley Chapel is the likely second-round opponent. Ribault and American Heritage, which will be the biggest tests, are a ways down the road.

2. Westlake (Atlanta)
Record: 15-0 | Last week: 2
Westlake has some time off to prepare for the AAAAAA playoffs as the first game isn't until Feb. 23 at the earliest. At some point, though, expect a matchup with unbeaten Buford.

3. Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati)
Record: 20-0 | Last week: 3
The Cougars finished the regular season with a convincing 67-39 win over a solid Notre Dame Academy team and move on to the Division 1 Princeton 2 playoffs Saturday against 32nd seed Middletown.

4. Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.)
Record: 6-0 | Last week: 4
The Royals should have smooth sailing until Feb. 18, when the bus will load up for a crosstown game at rival and new No. 25 Minnetonka — which came within one point of knocking off the nation's No. 4 team the first time around.

5. Edison Academy (Detroit)
Record: 0-0 | Last week: 5
We're pretty sure the Pioneers will finally begin their season Feb. 10 against Cornerstone Health & Tech but Michigan's rollout of winter sports hasn't been all that smooth. Maybe this time.

6. Incarnate Word Academy (St. Louis)
Record: 16-0 | Last week: 6
The toughest regular season game remaining for the Red Knights appears to be Burroughs on Feb. 24, but even then, the chances of an upset are remote. Postseason, however, will present more of a challenge.

7. Cypress Creek (Houston)
Record: 26-0 | Last week: 7
The Cougars have rampaged through the Houston area so far. That pattern of domination is likely to continue through the first two games in the 6A Region 3 playoffs. But No. 13 DeSoto or perennial power Duncanville will likely show up eventually, and that will be a different story.

8. Norman (Okla.)
Record: 12-0 | Last week: 8
There was a lot of anticipation surrounding Thursday's game vs. Classen SAS but unfortunately it was canceled, meaning the biggest challenge left before postseason will be a Feb. 19 trip to Edmond Memorial.

9. St. John-Vianney (Holmdel, N.J.)
Record: 3-0 | Last week: 9
It took a long time for New Jersey to get going, but it didn't take long for a big game to show up on the schedule: The Lancers against unbeaten Saddle River Day on Saturday. Luckily for the No. 9 team, it's in the friendly confines.

10. Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.)
Record: 9-0 | Last week: 12
Do the Panthers really deserve a top 10 ranking? If Virginia's best can beat talent-laden Bishop McNamara at home Saturday, there will be no doubt.

11. Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.)
Record: 19-1 | Last week: 12
The Eagles' season is complete unless an invite to the GEICO Nationals is forthcoming — and that assumes that the event is even played this year.

12. North Central (Indianapolis)
Record: 24-2 | Last week: 14
The 4A playoffs begin Saturday and the Panthers could potentially play two games in one day. The second could be against 20-4 Roncalli. Down the road, Bedford North Lawrence, which has a win over North Central, could make an appearance.

13. DeSoto (Texas)
Record: 20-2 | Last week: 13
To avoid a repeat of fights that have marred a couple of Eagle games, the DeSoto administration chose to forfeit the game against Cedar Hill last week.

14. Newark (Ohio)
Record: 19-1 | Last week: 16
The Wildcats wind up the regular season Friday, and will begin the Division 1 Central 4 playoffs Feb. 16 versus Mifflin. There are a lot of games in the Ohio postseason, and a lot of good teams, so there's no guarantee that Newark and No. 3 Mount Notre Dame will meet but it would be fun.

15. Fremont (Plain City, Utah)
Record: 18-0 | Last week: 15
The Silverwolves host 15-2 Syracuse on Friday in what should be the last test before the Utah 6A playoffs begin — but even then, Fremont is the heavy favorite to run the table.

16. Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.)
Record: 2-0 | Last week: 18
The Vikings got a late start but are making up for lost time. There are three games in the next seven days, culminating with a Tuesday matchup against longtime rival and perennial power Cardinal O'Hara.

17. Grandview (Aurora, Colo.)
Record: 4-0 | Last week: 17
The Wolves will get their first test Friday traveling to unbeaten Arapahoe. The toughest tests, though, likely won't come until postseason.

18. Valley Vista (Surprise, Ariz.)
Record: 3-0 | Last week: 20
The Monsoon travel to 6-1 Hamilton on Friday, and though that spacious gym won't be unfamiliar, it's still a tough place to play.

19. Rutgers Prep (Somerset, N.J.)
Record: 3-0 | Last week: 19
Setting up games has been a challenge for a lot of teams this year, and the Argonauts are no exception — which is why the schedule is more likely to resemble a walk in the park than a walk on the wild side.

20. Anderson County (Lawrenceburg, Ky.)
Record: 13-0 | Last week: 22
The Bearcats slipped past Bethlehem 57-56 last week to stay in the MaxPreps Top 25 — but with unbeaten Elizabethtown and talented Sacred Heart back-to-back next week, the ranking is definitely in peril.

21. Hazel Green (Ala.)
Record: 29-1 | Last week: 21
The Trojans are ready to start the 6A playoffs, and won't face 7A Hoover again, as the schools are in different divisions. And Hazel Green has already beaten the second- and third-ranked 6A teams handily, so it could be a relatively easy ride the rest of the way.

22. Ponchatoula (La.)
Record: 26-0 | Last week: 23
The Bayou State's best beat Mt. Carmel, the second-ranked 5A team, by 21 on Monday. The Green Wave have two games remaining in the regular season before the playoffs begin Feb. 18.

23. Upperman (Baxter, Tenn.)
Record: 25-0 | Last week: 25
The regular season is over, and the Division II playoffs won't start until Feb. 20, so the Bees will have plenty of time to get busy on the practice floor.

24. Bearden (Knoxville, Tenn.)
Record: 19-1 | Last week: NR
The Bulldogs jump into the rankings thanks to a 47-39 win over previous No. 10 Ensworth. This offsets an early season loss to Alcoa, which has won 13 of its last 16 games. A trip to 24-2 Grainger is on the docket Saturday.

25. Minnetonka (Minn.)
Record: 7-1 | Last week: NR
It's rare that a team gets into the MaxPreps Top 25 thanks to a loss, but the Skippers' ability to come within one point of No. 4 Hopkins got them a bid. That said, unbeaten Chaska is Friday's opponent, so the celebration could be short.

Dropped out: No. 10 Ensworth (Tenn.), No. 24 Johnston (Iowa)
High school girls basketball rankings: Lake Highland Prep extends win streak to 32 games, remains No. 1 in this week's OFFICIAL Top 25 - OFFICIAL
High school girls basketball rankings: Lake Highland Prep extends win streak to 32 games, remains No. 1 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25
State championship banners don't have an asterisk on them — nor do national rankings. As many of the teams in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings begin navigating the always treacherous waters of postseason play, their goal is to win a state title, no matter what the circumstances.

If they do, the banner that goes up in the gym isn't going to note that COVID changed everything in 2020-21 – nor should it.

And the same applies to the MaxPreps Top 25. Sure, a couple California teams would likely have bumped some teams out, and certainly a few DMV schools would be taking up spots, plus there would likely be entries from unrepresented states such as Illinois and New York.

But every year is different. Key players get hurt. Banked 3-pointers go in at the buzzer. Officials make goofy calls. This season is unique for other reasons, but regardless, every team on the list below has had a very good, if not great, year. And every team on the list below deserves its spot and the recognition that goes along with it.

There are always caveats, strange occurrences, inexplicable upsets and those that manage to end the season in the MaxPreps Top 25 have somehow found a way to earn a ranking. And in that regard, this year is no different – and there's no asterisk on these rankings, just as there won't be on that banner in the gym.

It's not the circumstances that define teams — it's how they respond.

MaxPreps Top 25 Girls Basketball Rankings

Record: 16-0 | Last week: 1
The Lake Highland Prep train is rolling, and there doesn't seem to be anything short of GEICO Nationals that can derail it. The Highlanders trounced Anclote 88-17 last Thursday in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals and beat Eustis 67-57 in the regional semifinals Tuesday.

2. Westlake (Atlanta)
Record: 15-0 | Last week: 2
Westlake has had nearly three weeks off but will finally get back on the court this weekend in the AAAAAA playoffs – which makes it time for our annual question: Why doesn't Georgia just call them the 6A playoffs instead of making us count the "A"s?

3. Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati)
Record: 21-0 | Last week: 3
Mount Notre Dame will continue to feast on low seeds for a few more games, but there are a bunch of good teams in Ohio and the road to the state title will surely have a few bumps.

4. Hopkins (Minnetonka, Minn.)
Record: 8-0 | Last week: 4
It could be that Hopkins was distracted the last time it played Minnetonka and the one-point win was an aberration. And then Minnetonka lost to Chaska and dropped out of the MaxPreps Top 25. Still, Hopkins' game at Minnetonka Thursday definitely qualifies as a big one.

5. Edison Academy (Detroit)
Record: 2-0 | Last week: 5
A game at Renaissance on Saturday should be the toughest so far.

6. Incarnate Word Academy (St. Louis)
Record: 18-0 | Last week: 6
Incarnate Word continues to show the Show Me State who's boss, though no games are on the schedule until Feb. 24. At that point, 8-1 Burroughs will be the opponent, which will likely be the last real test until postseason.

7. Cypress Creek (Houston)
Record: 27-0 | Last week: 7
The Cougars are 68-1 over the past two seasons.

8. Norman (Okla.)
Record: 13-0 | Last week: 8
Norman only beat Edmond Memorial by 12 the first time around and that game was in the friendly confines. Friday's rematch is at Edmond Memorial.

9. St. John-Vianney (Holmdel, N.J.)
Record: 6-0 | Last week: 9
The Garden State's best hosts unbeaten Red Bank Catholic on Saturday. New Jersey's postseason will be brief and local, so the usual playoff pressure will be much reduced.

10. Paul VI (Chantilly, Va.)
Record: 10-0 | Last week: 10
Ten games isn't very many but it's enough to convince us Paul VI is a top 10 team.

11. Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.)
Record: 19-1 | Last week: 11
The Eagles have added three games to their schedule, playing in the Independent School Nationals this weekend. Along with New Hope (ranked in preseason), the event will bring in other quality teams as well, giving Montverde a chance to jump into the top 10 – or conceivably drop down in the rankings.

12. DeSoto (Texas)
Record: 21-2 | Last week: 13
Before any shot at No. 7 Cypress Creek is possible, a third win over Duncanville will likely be required.

13. Newark (Ohio)
Record: 21-1 | Last week: 14
Newark and No. 3 Mount Notre Dame are the favorites in Ohio, and though both won't be tested for a while, there's no guarantee the two can navigate the tricky shoals of Ohio girls basketball long enough to get the matchup fans want to see.

14. Grandview (Aurora, Colo.)
Record: 4-0 | Last week: 17
Mullen's only loss of the season came to Grandview and those two teams meet again Friday.

15. Fremont (Plain City, Utah)
Record: 20-0 | Last week: 15
The regular season ends Thursday for Fremont with the 6A playoffs to follow. It looks like the path to an unbeaten season has few potholes.

16. Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.)
Record: 4-0 | Last week: 16
Continues to handle the competition in the Philadelphia Catholic League but Neumann-Goretti could be a more than a handful come Feb. 23.

17. Princess Anne (Virginia Beach, Va.)
Record: 8-0 | Last week: NR
The Cavaliers are averaging 80.5 points per game so far this season.

18. Anderson County (Lawrenceburg, Ky.)
Record: 15-0 | Last week: 20
We'll find out just how good Anderson County is this week. First up is 12-0 Elizabethtown on Thursday and then a trip to 11-3 Sacred Heart on Saturday.

19. Rutgers Prep (Somerset, N.J.)
Record: 4-0 | Last week: 19
Due to New Jersey's limited postseason, Rutgers Prep may not be seriously tested all year.

20. Chaska (Minn.)
Record: 8-0 | Last week: NR
Chaska burst the bubble of previous No. 25 Minnetonka with a 71-66 overtime win and jumped into the MaxPreps Top 25. But Hopkins shows up on the schedule in early March, so residence in the rankings after that is uncertain.

21. Hazel Green (Ala.)
Record: 31-1 | Last week: 21
The Trojans will likely face some teams with gaudy records — Mortimer Jordan and Hartselle among them — but so far, no one in the Yellowhammer State has been able to turn Hazel Green blue.

22. Ponchatoula (La.)
Record: 28-0 | Last week: 22
The 32-team 5A playoffs begin Friday. Ponchatoula is unlikely to be challenged until the third-round game on Feb. 26.

23. Bearden (Knoxville, Tenn.)
Record: 23-1 | Last week: 24
District play is under way in Tennessee and Bearden will likely have to get past 15-5 Farragut to advance to the regionals. Bearden only beat Farragut by one and by six in the first two meetings.

24. American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)
Record: 21-2 | Last week: NR
A third Florida team cracks the MaxPreps Top 25. Both of American Heritage's losses are to to-shelf teams and it also is the only team to have beaten Blanche Ely. A healthy Palm Bay will likely be the biggest challenge in the 5A playoffs.

25. Pius X (Lincoln, Neb.)
Record: 18-0 | Last week: NR
The only team that has given Pius X any trouble is Fremont, as every other win has been by 12 points or more. Since Fremont isn't in the same division, it looks like Pius X is on track for a state title and a permanent home in the MaxPreps Top 25.

Dropped out: No. 12 North Central (Indianapolis); No. 18 Valley Vista (Surprise, Ariz.); No. 23 Upperman (Baxter, Tenn.); No. 25 Minnetonka (Minn.)
